Sparring is a cornerstone of any Martial Arts program.
At Apologia, Green Belts get the opportunity to earn their sparring gear.
We teach both Tournament Sparring and Street Survival.
Tournament sparring is about control. It is the style of fighting used in competitions. As such there are rules involved that don’t exist in Street Survival which limits its real world application. This style of fighting is designed to enhance your reflexes, your mental skills and strategy, your speed and aim, and your stamina in a safer fighting environment.
As stated above, its main use is the teaching of control, by being made to follow the rules of the fight. You can have all the strength and ability in the world, but without control you risk losing the fight.
Street Survival is about surviving. It is about teaching real world application of the Martial Arts so that you can be confident in you ability to defend yourself. This style of sparring goes hand in hand with our Self Defense curriculum.
It teaches you to think on your feet, and fight to survive. One of the most important things you will learn is situational awareness - being aware of your surroundings and how to be ready to defend yourself.
